Bridesmaids

By Maisie Buchan

Several times when a film has a lot of hype surrounding it, it can let you down, and Bridesmaids has certainly had a lot of it. This movie has been
slated as a ‘must see’ down to the fact that it’s funny, oh and it happens to be written by and mainly starring women. At first I found this patronising, adamant this wasn’t something new, what about Tina Fey or Ruth Jones? Jennifer Aniston’s perfect comic timing in Friends? However, as much as I tried it’s hard to think of many good female heavy comedy movies.

Having convinced some male friends that the film was meant to be funny (“Like Mean Girls!”) for both genders, we went to the cinema. As I took my seat I began to feel nervous that it wasn’t going to be good, and, as a woman, I’d be left embarrassed. As Kristen Wiig appeared on screen I calmed down, even if the film was awful I was sure she would be good. And she was! For an actress with such a unique look she always manages to play different, yet equally convincing characters in everything she does. Perhaps having (alongside Annie Mumolo) written the script herself, the character of Annie is closer to her personality. If it is then she is flawed but sweet, and very witty.

Much has been made of the film’s ‘food poising scene’. This kind of gross-out comedy is not normally my sort of thing, and although not my favourite part of the movie I did still find it amusing. Just in case my distaste at poo jokes is making it sound like I’m trying to come off as highbrow, I have to inform you I found Wigg’s impression of a penis pure genius.

Helen is a completely over the top character played very subtly by Rose Byrne, who despite providing a lot of comedy also made me genuinely angry. Imported actor Chris O’Dowd (The It Crowd) evoked a lot of sympathy as policeman Nathan Rhodes; by the end of the film I had run the emotional gauntlet.

Whilst I don’t think Bridesmaids is the revolutionary comedy some were hoping for, I would still recommend it. Kirsten Wiig & Annie Mumolo can now join up with the likes of Jones and Fey (although she will always be the undisputed queen) as strong comedy writers. Let’s hear it for the girls!
