Whilst on my way to the swimming pool the other day I saw a man in a high viz jacket speeding down the road on a skateboard. Oh sorry, did I say a man? I meant a dog…
Bodhi the Lakeland terrier is becoming quite the celebrity these days. Naturally he stands out like a sore thumb (even in the streets of Brighton), and so can be easily found on Youtube, having been filmed by his many fans. An appearance on Britain’s Got Talent amused millions around the country and served to increase his popularity. Things aren't, however, looking as cheerful for his owner Jonathan Fell, who has been issued with an £80 fine and threatened with an ASBO. Whilst on his trademark skateboard, Bodhi apparently knocked two women off their feet, which is no kind of behaviour for a dog I think is a potential national treasure. Hope is here though, the ASBO threat came when Fell was told to keep his pooch on a lead. I’m thrilled to inform you that when spotted on 18/06/11 the dog was indeed tethered to his owner, let’s hope for all our sakes it stays that way.
South East England may have one skateboarding dog, but in California around fifty of them turned up to compete in a surfing competition. Imperial Beach was home to the event that saw the contestants dressed in sunglasses, Hawaiian shirts and life jackets. Judged in the categories of style, confidence and length of time on a wave, I’m sure months of preparation went into the pooches’ big day. Giving all proceeds to charity, some extra generous canines even let their owners join in on the fun and get on the board with them. It sounds to me like a fun time was had by all.
And so finally we go from dogs in sunglasses to a horse in a hat. On a personal level animals dressed up in people clothes are nothing new; Batman cat and Yoda dog, I’ve seen them all. What I did find surprising about a certain mare at Ascot last week was the fact it was donning the first hat made for a horse. Designer to the stars, Stephen Jones based his £8,000 creation on the one Eliza Dolittle (Audrey Hepburn) wore to the races in the film version of My Fair Lady. I salute you Jones! Ladies day at Ascot has always been a fashion show and I’m glad that a horse has finally got to take center stage at what should be an occasion for them. For me this tale becomes a classic when you take in to account that the horse/model in question is two year old Amber, owned by Fox’s biscuits. Animals, outlandish hats and biscuits, I can’t think of anything better.
